HOW TO GET YOUR BABY TO EAT DURING A COLD

We have received many emails from frustrated moms wondering why their babies loose their appetite during a cold.

Babies are like adults. When we get a cold we have trouble swallowing and we loose our appetite. Likewise, when a baby has a stuffy nose and a sore throat they have trouble eating and prefer softer textures.

Here are a few helpful tips to get your baby to eat again. During this time it's important to increase the number of nutrients with every bite.

    STAGE 1 - PUREE.
For infants who are eating purees, we recommend thinning out the puree with breast milk or formula. This will make it easier for your baby to swallow the solids. Make sure you use either formula or breast milk to add the extra calories to their diet rather than water which has no added nutritional benefit.

For Babies who are on stage 2 puree and meats, you can thin their solids with chicken/beef/veg stock along with formula depending on the type of food your feeding.

For toddlers who are eating finger food, we would recommend giving them something softer, like over - cooked pasta or soft udon with a ground meat with vegetable sauce instead of chunky meat. As they get better and recover from their cold you can gradually increase the texture.

Also shorter more frequent feedings can help to build up their appetite again. And remember to keep them hydrated with lots of fluids.

    CHICKEN IN MILK
    Chicken and Milk

This recipe is one of our favorites from River Cafe Cook Book Easy.

It's an easy recipe with only a few ingredients and tastes yummier the next day in a sandwich or served cold.

    • 1.5 kg Organic Chicken
    • 6 Garlic cloves
    • 1 Lemon
    • 500 ml Milk
    • 80g Unsalted butter
    • 8-10 Sage leaves

    1. Wipe the Chicken clean and trim off all the excess fat.
    2. Peel the garlic
    3. Cut the lemon in half, squeezing the juice into the skin and cavity
    4. Heat the milk to boiling point.
    5. Melt the butter in a thick bottomed pan large enough to hold the chicken, and brown the chicken on all sides
    6. Add the garlic and sage and fry for a minute.
    7. Put the chicken on its and side, and add the milk to come halfway up the chicken.
    8. Simmer with the lid at half tilt, for 1 hour.
    9. Baste the uncovered side from time to time.
    10. Turn the chicken on to its other side after 1/2 hour.
    11. After an hour take the Chicken out of the milk and quickly whisk the milk until it thickens into a curdled sauce. Then add the chicken back to the sauce.
This chicken is also delicious with a side of vegetable mash and green sweet peas for a balanced meal.

    VEGETABLE MASH

This is a great alternative to potato mash and great way to sneak those veggies into your child's diet.

    • 2 large potato
    • 400g pumpkin
    • 400g sweet potato
    • 2 large parsnips
    • 1 large onion chopped
    • 2 ripe tomatoes quartered
    • 4 cloves garlic, unpeeled
    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • 1 oz of butter chopped
    1. Preheat oven to 375f
    2. Peel the potatoes pumpkin, sweet potato and parsnips then cut into large pieces and place in large baking dish with onion tomato and garlic
    3. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle (seasoning)
    4. Bake the vegetables for 1 ½ hr or until soft and starting to brown – turn every 30 minutes
    5. Transfer the vegetables into a bowl, add the butter and mash.
You can also substitute artichoke for parsnips or carrot for pumpkin.

Fresh herbs are also a tasty addition stir through some chopped basil, parsley when mashing the vegetables.
